概要：
今日，私たちをとりまく環境には，途方もない情報があふれています．1993年に画像を表示できるウェブブラウザ Mosaic がリリースされてから，20年が経った現在，イメージは，私たちの生活においてますます大きな比重を占めつつあります．W. J. T. ミッチェルは，社会的関係の媒介に，視覚が言語と同じように重要であると指摘しています．とすると，私たちが社会において様々な関係を取り結んでいくに際して，見ることに対する理解が必須であり，大切なわけです．しかし，そうした視覚的なリテラシーの必要性と重要性にもかかわらず，視覚の科学は，いまだ研究領域として確立されているとは言い難い状況にあります．
このシンポジウムは，研究・教育にかかわる視覚をテーマに開催されます．社会と深く関わりながら，実践的に，また現場に近い立場で活動する研究者が，多様な分野から講演，報告し，議論します．

Today, the environment surrounding us is filled with enormous amounts of information. At the present, when 20 years after the web browser Mosaic, which could display images, was released in 1993, the visual is occupying a bigger and bigger position in our life. W. J. T. Mitchell points out that vision is as important as language in mediating social relations. When we live our lives in society, an understanding for seeing is required and significant. However, in spite of the need and importance of visual literacy, it is hard to say that the visual science is established as an academic field.
This symposium is held under the theme of vision concerning research and education. Researchers who practice on the ground in various fields give speech, presentation and discuss.
